DEI and meritocracy are having a moment together. From the US' legislative DEI rollbacks to large companies rebranding/removing diversity hiring policies, the idea that talent alone should determine success is gaining traction. But does meritocracy work the way we think it does?

At its core, meritocracy promises fairness; the belief that hard work and ability dictate success. But in practice, access to opportunity isn’t equal. If meritocracy worked as intended, leadership teams would reflect society’s diversity. So why don’t they?
